Every town has at least one. That is, a topic that is sure to energize discussion between residents. Is it this one or that one? Is that team better or this one? Is this grocery store more popular than that one?
Update: Mr. Cone closed and has been replaced by a bank.
In Monroe, NY, the topic is one of critical importance. Everyone has an opinion about it. If you don’t, then you must not live here.
So here it is. Are the products better at Mr. Cone or at Wally’s Ice Cream Parlor?
Both businesses are located on Route 17M in Monroe, and both are on the East side of the street.
Both have parking tables and sufficient parking.
Both are always busy (except when I took these pictures but that was on purpose!).
Wally’s is open from 11:15am to 9pm every day. Mr. Cone is open from 11am to 9:30pm every day. Slight advantage to Mr. Cone in terms of availability, but it’s only a slight one.
Both Wally’s and Mr. Cone’s phones are answered by the 2nd ring if you call them.
Both have reviews from happy customers that can be found on various web sites like Yelp, HudsonValley.com, myfoxny.com, and more.
Both have hard ice cream and soft ice cream and the typical ice cream desserts.
So how in the world can a winner be chosen?
Aha, I say. It’s all a matter of personal taste.
The only way to POSSIBLY figure out which is better is to try every single flavor in both places. I’ve only made my way through two or three flavors in Wally’s and the same number from Mr. Cone.
I do have a favorite, but I don’t think it’s fair to say what that is based on just a few samplings. My opinion just might change after I’ve had 10 different flavors.
If you’ve ever been or ever lived in Monroe, weigh in! Which was your favorite?
Until then, I’m off to taste some more.

Does Wally’s have the Spounge Bob square pants ice cream bar? Mr. Cone does. Not a game changer, but still important .
