The town of Chester, which was named after Chester, England, includes the Hamlet of Sugar Loaf and village of Chester. Approximately 12,000 people live in the town, and 4,000 of those are located in the village.
The village of Chester NY was incorporated in 1892. It claims to be the birthplace of “Philadelphia Cream Cheese,” which contrary to popular notion, was not actually developed in Philadelphia. The region subsequently produced other cheese brands such as Neufchatel, Fromage DeBrie and Clover Brand.
The historical society has a website full of interesting information. There are also many photos covering all aspects of past life in the area (see the section entitled “Collections” on their website). In addition, some photos need more information, so if you ever had family in the area, take a look at the “Unknowns” section. Perhaps you can help clarify details about the history of the area!
The Chester area boasts beautiful parks and town activities including annual fireworks, movie nights, nature hikes, and more.
For example, Goosepond Mountain State Park is a 1,500-acre park located off of Route 17M in Chester, near Monroe. The park welcomes hikers, joggers and horseback riders. It is undeveloped forest, with a trail that meanders through the middle, crossing a bridge and passing old rock foundations from the past. The beginning part of the trail is an upward hike, but most of the way is relatively level. It’s a great spot for a workout!
Another trail is the Orange County Heritage Trail which can be accessed at the Chester train station and used by bicyclists, runners and walkers and skateboarders. This trail can also be entered in the Monroe/Harriman and Goshen areas. It’s 14 miles long and is easy to traverse during much of the year. In the winters, though, the trail is not kept clean. That’s a great time to try cross-country skiing, or put on some boots to walk he dog!
The Castle Event and Fun Center is also located in Chester, with a 5,000 square foot event room, an 11,000 square foot area that can hold more than 1,000 people and the Fun Center itself. The Castle Fun Center is an Amusement Park and Entertainment Center with Go Karts, Roller Skating, Laser Tag, Laser Maze, an Arcade, Rides, Mini Golf, Batting Cages and more.
Also found in the same shopping center as the bowling alley is the town’s movie theater. The Elite Cinema 6 theater shows the latest movies, offers gift certificates, and theater rental opportunities.
Garbage Pick Up/Recycling
The town of Chester, NY has published garbage pickup and recycling information on their website. The day of the week for garbage pickup is defined based upon street address (see “garbage day pickup” on this link). Recycling is also available, as is bulk pickup (the latter by request).
Chester’s main grocery store is ShopRite, located at 78 Brookside Ave. The store has all the typical products, as well as a pharmacy. They also offer delivery services.
The hamlet of Sugar Loaf is an artisan village, with unique shopping and events. The area includes photographers, painters, jewelers, custom clothing designers and even a deli! The shops are typically open on weekends, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Sugar Loaf also has a Fall Festival with crafts, beer, music and food.
While much of Chester includes homes that are not part of a specific development, there are also some area communities that might be of interest to buyers moving to the area. Some of them are:
- Chesterdale Estates: This is a new community of farm house colonials on at least an acre of land. There are multiple floor plan choices, all with custom kitchens with granite counter tops, hardwood flooring, 9′ ceilings on the first floor and more. The community is located in the northeast part of Chester.
- Surrey Meadows: This community was built in the 1960s and contains various house styles including ranch, bi-level and colonial. It is located on the northern part of Chester.
- Whispering Hills: This condominium complex is located in the heart of Chester, near shopping, highways and all Chester has to offer. Complex amenities include a tennis court, basketball court, two swimming pools and two clubhouses.
