Walton Lake, Monroe NY
Walton Lake is a reservoir located in Monroe NY, accessible from Lakes Road. Yesterday was the first day of the Memorial Day weekend and it was a great morning for a paddle. As I was moving my canoe down the lake, I thought it was a perfect time to share information about this spot again.
Walton Lake is a great place for fishing. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation stocks the lake annually with close to 4,000 brown trout. The DEC website also indicates the lake contains bass (largemouth, smallmouth, rock), trout, pickerel, bluegill and yellow perch. Yesterday morning there were five other boats on the lake, several with fishing rods in evidence.
In addition to fishing, boating is allowed as well. Specifically canoes, kayaks, and any other non-motor boats. Because this is a reservoir, gasoline powered boats are not allowed.
The lake is about a mile long, so rowing from one end to the other can provide a bit of exercise for those who want it! There is a parking lot which has room for about ten cars, but there are also some spots to park along and across the road.
In addition to getting exercise, there can be a bit of sightseeing to do. Specifically, you might see various birds, turtles and other lake creatures. There are also homes around the eastern side of the lake which are interesting to view from the water. There is a community on that side of the lake (Osseo Park) which is accessible only by private road.
If you want to enjoy this lake, take route 17M in Monroe to Lakes Road. Stay on Lakes Road for approximately 2.4 miles, and you will see the sign for Walton Lake, and the parking area, on your left. It’s across from Heaton Road and the deli. Pick up a sandwich, hop in your canoe, and get going! You’ll get to experience the view shown here!
